Datalogic Releases SLS10 Safety Laser Scanner

Company declares a world first with boundary-pushing 10 meter range.

Datalogic’s latest release is the SLS10, a safety laser scanner with a 10 meter (32.8 foot) maximum safety range. Combined with a 275 degrees scanning angle, the safety scanner can provide up to 240 square meters of coverage for any objects 70 mm or larger. When announcing the release, Datalogic declared the SLS10 the first device of its kind to accurately reach such a range.

In addition to the SLS10’s headline-drawing max distance, Datalogic also provided maximum distance measurement at each 10 mm breakpoint.

  • 8.75 meters for 60 mm objects
  • 7.5 meters for 50 mm objects
  • 5.5 m for 40 mm objects
  • 5 meters for 30 mm objects

These variable breakpoints make the scanner applicable to a wide range of applications, including palletizing systems, robotic cells, laser cutting machines, woodworking machinery, warehouse AGVs/AMRs, and much more. Customers gain peace of mind that every risk has been safely addressed while lowering total system costs.

The SLS10 also offers an 84 ms response time and an angular resolution (which measures the minimum distance between consecutive laser measurement points) of up to 0.059 degrees. This makes the SLS10 particularly useful for warehousing robots such as AMRs and AGVs.

On the value added features front, Datalogic highlighted a redesigned user interface, DL Sentinel, for use with the laser scanner. New features include an overhauled system for configuring safety zones, the ability to monitor master and remote devices simultaneously and a new OptimaTune feature that tries to automatically configure your scanner based on environmental conditions and job specifications. Selected models also include positional zone set switching by encoder, a patent-pending feature that enables automatic zone changes without additional sensors.

The SLS10 also complies with SIL-2 and PLd safety standards. Both Safety Integrity Level (SIL) and Performance Level (PL) are sliding scales measuring how likely a component is to fail in an emergency. Datalogic also highlighted a strong immunity to dust to reduce false triggering, preventing unnecessary and costly machine shutdowns.

In their release, Andrea Donadel, Industrial Automation Products and Solutions Executive Vice President at Datasensing, one of Datalogic’s business units, highlighted the SLS10’s focus on quality.
